With a deep curiosity for music, I set out to explore how sound affects people and how its invisible currents might be captured visually. I asked: How could I convey the sensations of being tranced in song? Could I capture an absence of sound? Could the frequencies and vibrations around instruments be photographed? To investigate, I ventured into sonic spaces and into encounters beyond with a friend. As photographer I observed and documented responses. My approach to sound is always internal first, interpreting its affective force before expressing it externally. Photography became the ideal medium to convey these ephemeral effects, allowing me to weave multiple moments in time into a single frame, painting intimate portraits and layered narratives that evoke the unseen
The central figure in these images is Michaela. As music flows through her, her body becomes a vessel for its internal effects, drifting and slipping through space and time carried by these sonic currents. In these moments, she inhabits a realm beyond the present, only truly known to her. Dimly lit rooms become canvases for light to trace the subtleties of her movements, each gesture unfolding like a slow passage through time. Through her presence, I could capture a sense of this invisible impact of rhythm, melody, and resonance, translating the sensory experience of music into visual format. Each frame acting as a bridge between what is heard and what is felt.
The project evolved into a Zine design, abstracting the photographs into graphical scores imagined for DAW software like Ableton Live or FL Studio. I wondered how a particular image might sound, by using composition and annotations of musical notation to translate visuals. The design unfolds across three volumes: Sonic Experimentation, Architecture of Sound, and Absence of Sound. Each volume invites careful reflection, emphasizing the power of slow design and attentive reading. The Zine encourages viewers to pause, engage, and question their interpretations with each encounter, bridging visual and auditory experience while connecting the liminal spaces between music, movement, and visual perception.
