Cultural Soundscapes: Umculo wamaXhosa is a digital learning space that listens before it teaches. Rooted in rhythm and respect, it translates cultural expression into an interactive application that moves gently, clearly, and attentively. Sound becomes story through time, a living archive where learning happens through the act of listening, and understanding. Its art direction is inspired by the vibrancy of the Xhosa culture, where visual media becomes a collage of archival imagery, dynamic shapes and illustrative strokes, as layered compositions to unfold.
This project challenges the dominance of Western musical norms in education. Offered in both isiXhosa and English, it operates in two streams: to preserve and teach traditional Xhosa music in local communities, and to expand university-level ethnomusicology curricula. The application is accessible to different groups by focusing on fundamental concepts. It invites dialogue between cultural systems, nurturing awareness and exchange through sound. The design builds on the concept of a vast space of sound, where students get to venture into and explore.
Cultural Soundscapes transforms Xhosa musical principles into a sensory experience. Its modular interface allows learners to navigate oral histories, rhythms, and cultural narratives fluidly. Designed for clarity, curiosity, and accessibility, it encourages students to engage collaboratively and intuitively, learning through play, quizzes, and shared rhythm making songs together.
